About Us

Town and Country Nurseries is a third generation garden center, landscaping company and florist. Frank Mekrut owned Forest City Nurseries in Middletown with his two brothers when World War II called him away to duty. He returned eager to branch out on his own and moved his young family to a wooded area nestled above the Connecticut River to start a business using the skills he had learned all his life. Town and Country began as a tree company in 1952 with the occasional newspaper wrapped geranium making its way into someone's station wagon. Frank's entrepreneurial skills left no stone unturned and he and the children could often be seen selling beach balls to motorists passing through to the shore on the old Route 9A.  He instilled in his children a sense of pride in the business and in hard work.  Though all five of the kids worked in the business through the years, only Frank's daughters Callie and Andrea, continue to work at the nursery today.  The business has adapted through the years and the tree company has become a garden center, landscaping company and florist. The nursery built a loyal customer base thanks to Frank's generous spirit and community involvement. Some of those customers still frequent the nursery today.  In 1972, Frank's son-in-law, Bob, came to work at the nursery. He worked for Frank for a number of years until Frank was ready for retirement and then he took over.  Bob, Callie and Andrea own the nursery today. Bob and Callie's two children also work in the business, Mark runs the landscaping department and Lauren is at the garden center.  The garden center, set on three acres, has grown to include display gardens, two greenhouses and an outdoor kitchen.  The landscape company installs and maintains plants and hardscapes alike. Together, Bob, Callie and Andrea have brought the nursery to places Frank would have never imagined while still maintaining that small town community-minded atmosphere. Town and Country Nurseries is a family business, run by a family and run for families where everyone is treated like family.
